Who says executives don't read books?

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Do busy executives read books? A surprisingly good number of them do; they do it while travelling to work and back home and others at airports and during flights.

Nor is it all books on management or about the way the financial markets behave, like a recent best seller "How to beat the street", the street here referring to Wall Street, home of one of the world's largest stock exchanges.

Friedman's "The earth is flat" is a recent best seller, now available in paperback, bookstore salespersons say. As is Amartya Sen's "The argumentative Indian" also out in paperback.

Management books of a different kind, dealing with leadership qualities such as those about Jack Welch of GE are much sought after by middle-level executives who cannot wait to climb up the corporate ladder.

Numerous books about Six Sigma and total quality control pass through airport bookstores into the hands of travelling executives.

Many books on practical spirituality are bought and presumably read by executives.

Deepak Chopra's "Ageless body, timeless mind" is sold widely as is Robin Sharma's latest, "The greatness guide".

Executives like to relax during long trips, and fiction is always bought at airport newsstands.

Robert Ludlum is an all-time favourite with them, perhaps his books of intrigue and intrepid espionage remind some of the boardroom battles.
