GUNTUR: Eighty-five students who secured ranks in medicine stream of EAMCET-2006 were given admission in various colleges across the State from the counselling centre set up on the Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) campus here on Friday. Though students and parents were present well in advance, the actual counselling process began only after 10.30 a.m. after it was formally launched in Hyderabad. Rekapalli Rajasekhar, who secured eighth 8th, was the first student to be given admission from the centre. He opted for Guntur Medical College. He said that he wanted to do his Post-Graduation in either cardiology or radiology. K.B.N. Sirisha from Vijayawada, who secured 20th rank, was the first girl student to be given admission from the centre. She opted for Osmania Medical College and aims to become an oncologist.
Students' choice
Students preferred Osmania Medical College followed by Andhra Medical College in Visakhapatnam and Gandhi Medical College in Secunderabad. Some seats were yet to be filled at Guntur Medical College. Many parents and students were happy with the process. "Earlier, it was done from a centralised location - NTR University of Health Sciences in Vijayawada. But the online process is convenient and fast," opined S. Lakshmi Narayana, parent of 10th ranker S. Rajesh Kumar. Renovation of the students' centre, where counselling was conducted on the ANU campus, was done with the support of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE), said ANU Admissions Director P.V.V. Sathyanarayana. Ranks up to 500 were called for on the first day. By Friday evening, students who secured ranks up to 483 were given admission, said EAMCET-2006 Admissions Officer at ANU centre Uppalapati Surya Kumari. Authorities called ranks between 500 and 2,000 on Saturday.
