NEDUMBASSERY: Security has been tightened at the Cochin International Airport following a fresh directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in the light of the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai on Tuesday. Visitor's entry has been reintroduced and will be in force for an indefinite period, K.C. Suresh Kumar, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Commandant informed. A one-day ban was enforced on Wednesday following the bomb blasts. Visitors will not be allowed into terminals and the viewer's gallery during the ban period. Intelligence reports
Reportedly, the BCAS has issued the directive following intelligence input that airports could be targeted by terrorist elements. As part of beefing up the security, secondary ladder point checking has been enforced. CISF, which earlier patrolled only the internal periphery, has started patrolling the outer periphery of the airport as well along with the police, Mr. Suresh Kumar said. Two Quick Reaction Teams (QTR) comprising highly trained commandos have been kept on stand-by to face any emergency. Police will also carry out thorough anti-sabotage checks at the airport.
