Civic body to seek uniform parking fee

Issue comes up for discussion at a high-level meeting organised by Commissioner Jaju Issue discussed at meet organised by Jaju

  • Smart cards are the cheapest
  • Rs. 1.50 for two-wheeler per hour
  • Rs. 3 for four-wheeler per hour

HYDERABAD : The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) is planning to request the Government to ensure that uniform parking rates are enforced all over the twin cities.

With different rates prevailing in the parking lots in the city, vehicle owners tend to park their vehicles in public places leading to congestion. If there is a uniform parking rate, it will encourage them to park vehicles at the designated places only.

The issue of having a uniform rate came up for discussion at a high-level meeting organised by MCH Commissioner Sanjay Jaju with officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the South Central Railway (SCR), the HUDA and private parking owners to discuss possibility of acceptance of the smart parking cards.

    In-principle nod

The SCR had agreed, in principle, to accept the smart parking cards in railway parking lots, according to a corporation press release. Initially, smart cards would be accepted at Begumpet railway station parking lot.

The SCR was insisting that in the event of accepting the smart cards in all parking lots, payment of money should be made every week. However, the MCH was of the view that payment could be made monthly since the concept of using smart cards was new and hence amounts would be too small initially.

Mr. Jaju appealed to the AAI and the SCR to consider honouring of smart cards in all their parking lots. The release said the smart cards were well received by people. So far, the corporation had sold 23,500 cards, realising Rs. 32.52 lakhs. Available in Rs. 100, Rs. 250, Rs. 400 and Rs. 1,000 denominations, they are the cheapest. They cost Rs. 1.50 for two-wheeler per hour and Rs. 3 for four-wheeler per hour.
