HYDERABAD: The annual exercise of grading of engineering colleges by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) projected a similar picture this year too with majority colleges failing to meet the "standards". Releasing the results of the grading exercise here on Friday, K. Raja Reddy, State Secretary and B. Venkateshwar Reddy, State Technical Cell convenor said the grading was done based on the infrastructure, faculty, results, placement record and co-curricular activities of the colleges. The organisation covered all the private engineering colleges and gave the grading in four categories - Excellent, Good, Average and below Average. A comprehensive questionnaire was given to the colleges, faculty and students in each college eliciting their opinion. The questionnaire was then analysed by senior academics including some professors. They said 15 colleges in OU region, 12 colleges in AU Region and five colleges in SVU region got a place in `Excellent' category. They said majority colleges were found to be lacking in basic facilities but they continued to function due to the support of politicians. The list can be accessed on www.collegegrading.com and more details can be had on 27615292 and 27603955.
Dharna staged
The city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday staged a dharna near the Vivekananda Statue on Tank Bund, protesting the hike in fee for engineering courses and the police lathi charge on students who were agitating against the hike. Talking to reporters, MLA G. Kishen Reddy said the party was demanding restoration of the previous fee structure as well as a high-level enquiry into the lathi charge.
AISF representation
The national council of All-India Students Federation (AISF) represented to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, about the need to take firm action against police officials responsible for lathi charge on students near the counselling centres for engineering admissions. When a delegation of AISF called on him at Delhi on Friday, Dr. Reddy reminded them that he had already condemned the incidents and promised to look into them.
