Hospital Development Committees to be recast

Special Correspondent

Minister conducts surprise inspection at Government hospital

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government is planning to recast Hospital Development Committees and give them more powers, Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy announced here on Friday. Addressing reporters after an unscheduled visit to the Government Hospital, Peroorkada, she said the reconstituted committees would be empowered to take speedy decisions and step up mobilisation of funds for development. Hospital Development Societies at the medical colleges would also be recast, she added.

The Minister visited the Peroorkada Hospital at 8 a.m. on Friday. She went round the wards, inspected the facilities and sought feedback from the patients and staff. She asked the hospital authorities to repair the damaged lights and fans and the broken toilet doors. Patients said the faulty electrical wiring was posing danger. They, however, had no complaints about the quality of medical care.

Hospital Superintendent Rema Maheswari Thankachi and other doctors told the Minister that the HDC and City Corporation had initiated moves to resolve the inadequacies. They said many of the works were being tendered. The hospital authorities informed the Minister that the posts of six civil surgeons were lying vacant. The Minister said the vacancies would be filled within a week. She said the Government would release funds for the improvement of facilities in the labour room, operation theatres and the maternity ward in the hospital. The Minister told reporters that surprise inspections would be carried out in hospitals across the State regularly. She said the Government would take immediate steps to solve staff shortage in hospitals. Technicalities would not be allowed to hinder the development of basic services in hospitals, she added.
