Thiruvananthapuram: The team deputed by the Union Government to assess the damage caused by monsoon-related calamities in the State visited the coastal areas of the capital that were worst affected by the ravaging sea to get a first-hand assessment of the destruction, on Friday. The two-member team comprising Rekha Pai of the Union Ministry of Forests and Environment and Rajan Kumar of the Union Finance Ministry visited Beemapally at 8.45 a.m. Senior Revenue officials, the local legislator and councillor accompanied the team. They visited the house of Ahamed Kabeer and Laila Beevi along the coast that was damaged in the tidal action. Only a small portion of the kitchen where the hearth is placed remains of the four-room house now. The team inquired whether they were getting free ration from the Government and where they were put up. "We have three children and there is no place to stay, as the house has been washed away. Please provide land somewhere else," Ms. Beevi pleaded with them. The team later visited the house of Mohammed Haneefa, which has been abandoned as it is unfit for staying. Mr. Haneefa and his daughter, Nadeera Beevi, explained their plight to the team members. They said their life had been shattered and they were now forced to stay in the mosque, as the ravaging sea threatened to wash away their house. The team members also visited the house of Betty at Shanghumughom, which was damaged in the tidal waves. She complained to the team members that the free ration provided by the Government was of inferior quality. The team was apprised of the steps taken by the Government to contain the ravaging sea. Later, the team visited the relief camp set up at St. Joseph's LPS, Veli. The team members interacted with the parish priests and later visited Valiya Veli where over 25 houses were washed away in the tidal action. V. Surendran Pillai, M.A. Waheed, both legislators, Deputy Mayor V. Jayaprakash, District Collector N. Ayyappan, senior Revenue officials and local councillors accompanied the team.
