Bangalore: People should be warned against quacks who promise magical remedies and cosmetic treatments which turn out to be harmful, Governor T.N. Chaturvedi said here on Friday.

Speaking after inaugurating `Cosmecon 2006,' the international conference on aging and anti-aging organised by the Bangalore Dermatological Society, Mr. Chaturvedi said it was admirable that the conference was the first one to be recognised by the American Academy of Continuing Medical Education.

Suresh Joshipura, president of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venerologists and Leprologists, said that the association had requested the Union Government and the Medical Council of India to make dermatology a separate subject for study at the undergraduate level, as it had evolved into a major discipline in the last few years.

He also appealed to the Governor to impress upon the Union Government to increase the number of seats at the postgraduate level in dermatology.

The conference, which is on till July 16, will focus on the latest developments and technology related to skin treatment, which can slow down the aging process.

It would also promote research in the field, said the organisers. Around 1,000 dermatologists from all over the country and abroad are taking part in the conference. A public interactive forum has been arranged on July 16 to promote education about skin treatments and to counter propaganda and misinformation, which result from false advertisements.
