BANGALORE: The production manager of an Australian daily and his father were robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs. 2 lakh and $ 200 at knifepoint allegedly by an autorickshaw driver and his two accomplices in Magadi Road police station limits on Thursday night.

The police said Mahalinga Swamy, a Bangalorean who works as production manger of Daily Telegraph in Sydney, had come to the city to visit his parents, who stay in Basaveshwaranagar.

On Thursday evening, Swamy and his father Veerappa, a retired BDA surveyor, went to a jewellery shop on Richmond Road and purchased gold ornaments. Around 7.30 p.m. as it was raining, they took an autorickshaw to reach home.

However, on reaching Rajajinagar entrance, the driver took a wrong route, proceeding towards 6th Block, Rajajinagar and stopped the autorickshaw near Dasashrama, where his two accomplices were waiting. The driver and his two accomplices threatened Swamy and Veerappa with a knife and robbed them of the gold ornaments they had purchased.

They also relieved Swamy of a gold chain and a bracelet and $ 200, the police said. On a complaint by Swamy, the Magadi Road police have registered a case.
