Cloged drains

Wasting water

`Drinking water goes down the drain' ( The Hindu , June 7) has brought to the public gaze a glaring instance of gross neglect on the part of officials in charge of water supply maintenance. They may cite many reasons for leakages and give excuses for the abnormal delay in arresting leakages but the fact remains that a precious item like drinking water is allowed to be wasted or misused.

There was a profuse leakage of drinking water in front of KTVR Towers on Thadagam Road six months ago. It took officials about a month-and-a-half to repair it. After the repairs, a large pit dug up around the leakage point was left unfilled. The ward councillor, who was apprised of this, informed that the delay was perhaps owing to the conflict between the civic authorities and the cable people who apparently damaged the pipeline.

Condition of roads

Many things have been written about the condition of roads in Coimbatore, but they have fallen on deaf ears. Coimbatore Corporation is one of the leading revenue earners in Tamilnadu, next only to Chennai. Still the Corporation has not been maintaining roads.

Some of the examples are: Mettupalayam Road - entire stretch, Nehru Stret, Ramnagar - between Rajaji Road and Dr. Nanjappa Road - Vivekananda Road, Ramnagar - from K.M.C.H. to Cross Cut Road. All roads in Tatabad, Rajaji Road, Ramnagar - from Sathyamoorthy Road to Cross Cut Road Junction of Avanashi Road, Dr. Nanjappa Road and many more.

Potholes and deep trenches cause many accidents and also heavy damage to vehicles. They will break the spine of passengers in vehicles. The Corporation should attend to the roads without any further delay.

T.V. Kalyanakrishnan,

Vivekananda Road.

Velandipalayam.
