Special Correspondent

The driving licence section , which is equipped with an audio-video system, resembles a high-tech classroom

MANGALORE: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) here has incorporated an innovative method to make better drivers in the city and district.

The office is crowded, but the driving licence section at the basement resembles a high-tech classroom, equipped with an audio-video system, which gives the candidates something to think about road safety.

Film on road safety

The two-hour classes feature a film on road safety tips and messages on road accidents that affect could ruin the life of the victim. Experts in traffic management and road safety from the department give special lectures well before the test. The mandatory and cautionary road signs and many more facets of safe driving are given to the candidate, which helped them secure their licences early and become good and responsible drivers.

Outlining the advantages of such an exercise to The Hindu , Regional Transport Officer H.N. Ramesh said: "There is a philosophy behind the classroom atmosphere". The candidates, some of them just out of college, need to be given an insight into the impact of road accidents on the victims. In the modern world, mobility was essential. But in some cases, accidents wreck the confidence of the individual.

Classroom atmosphere

Mr. Ramesh said the classroom atmosphere had done a lot of good to the candidates with many youths realising the importance of safe driving.

The RTO was pondering over the idea of a miniature tabletop model where all the attributes of the road would be constructed, including the "narrow bridge", "steep hill", "zigzag road", and "round about".
