A.C. Krishna Rao
CHENNAI: A.C. Krishna Rao, founder-chairperson of the Stree Seva Mandir, passed away at her residence in Saligramam following a brief illness on Saturday morning. She was 93. Mrs. Rao was born on November 17, 1913, in Andhra Pradesh. She did her masters degree from the Presidency College and her diploma in teaching. She joined Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh to involve herself in social service and later became the chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Advisory Board. Along with her sisters-in-law, she began working with the rehabilitation of destitute women and children. On October 2, 1949, she founded Stree Seva Mandir along with A.T. Sundaramma and other like-minded people. The Seva Mandir now has 35 units, comprising old age homes, orphanage, training units for destitute women, the Karthi School in Saligramam and Jawahar Vidyalaya in Ashok Nagar. Mrs. Rao presided over the entire group actively till recently. She has received national and state awards, including the Janaki Devi Jamnalal Bajaj award. The 10th day ceremony would be held on July 23, between 9 a.m. and noon at 101/102, Dorai Arasu Street, Saligramam, family sources said.
