Housing for poor under urban mission sought

CPI(M) leader seeks white paper on money spent in slums

VIJAYAWADA: Officials of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation should draw plans to take up housing for the poor under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), according to Ch. Babu Rao, floor leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the VMC general body.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Mr. Babu Rao wondered why officials had not included any proposals under the sub-mission - Basic Services for Urban Poor - either last year when the Centre had cleared proposals estimated at Rs. 92 crores for the city or now when another set of new proposals estimated at Rs.73 were waiting to be cleared at the Centre.

He said though funds under the sub-mission would have the advantage of coming in more as grant and less as revolving fund, there seemed to be little interest among officials to evolve any proposal.

White paper

Mr. Babu Rao also sought publication of a white paper on how much of money had been spent on slums in accordance with the State Government's regulation that 40 per cent of funds in any urban area should be spent for improvement of slums.
