Coimbatore: Admissions to undergraduate courses at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) proceeded smoothly through counselling under the single window system, largely because of software that made the process transparent and efficient.

On either side of the stage in the university auditorium were two screens on which prospective students and their accompanying parents could see the number of seats available for each course, so that they could decide on the institution and the location well in advance, before their turn came at the counselling desk.

As the admissions proceeded, the screens connected to the laptops used by the counselling team instantly displayed the remaining vacancies and details regarding reservations under various categories, so that candidates waiting for their turn could change their plans at short notice. Call letters had gone out to the candidates according to their cut-off marks and their position in the merit list.

No confusion

With the name and cut-off mark of each candidate displayed on the screens, there was no confusion about seniority in the merit list. Anyone who claimed that they had a higher cut-off mark than the one on display could come forward and produce evidence of their claim.

After each student made his or her choice of course and institution, the admission certificate appeared briefly on the screen so that the details could be verified at once. If everything was correct, the certificate was printed out immediately. Students also had the option to refrain from choosing any of the courses on offer, if they did not find a suitable one.

TNAU called up to 200 candidates a day for admission to undergraduate degree programmes, with separate counselling for vocational course and diploma course students from July 9 to 14. On most days, there were two sessions.

Biology stream: B.Sc. Agriculture (at Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi and Killikulam campuses); B.Tech. Agricultural Biotechnology (Coimbatore); B.Sc. Horticulture (Periyakulam); B.Tech. Horticulture (Coimbatore); B.Sc. Forestry (Mettupalayam); B.Tech. Bioinformatics (Coimbatore); and B.Sc. Home Science (Madurai).

Mathematics stream: B.Tech. Agricultural Engineering (Kumulur); B.Tech. Food Process Engineering (Coimbatore); and B.Tech. Energy and Environmental Engineering (Coimbatore).

Affiliated colleges: TNAU adopted the single window system also for its affiliated colleges. These are: Adi Parasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai (private college, self-supporting courses in B.Sc. Agriculture and B.Sc. Horticulture); and the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal (popularly known as PAJANCOA, Government institution, course in B.Sc. Agriculture).

Diploma courses: The university brought admissions to diploma courses in agriculture under the single window system this year, for the first time. These courses were offered at: C. Subramaniam Institute of Agriculture, Tindivanam; Ramakrishna Institute of Agriculture, Periyanaickenpalayam; Thanthai Rover Institute of Agriculture, Perambalur; and Sagayathottam Institute of Agriculture, Thakkolam.
