An elegant depiction of Ramayana in Bharatanatya style

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The Mudrika Foundation for Indian performing arts run by danseuse Minal Prabhu presented a dance ballet, Raghuvamsha Chrita, on Saturday at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) auditorium here.

The 90-minute ballet was an elegant depiction of the Ramayana in classical Bharatanatya style. Staged as part of Mudrika's bi-annual programme, the ballet was the first-of-its-kind presentation by children.

Children aged between six and 11 and teenagers aged up to 18 were part of the ballet group.

The aim of the production was to expose the youth to India's time-tested puranas and epics, instil in them pride about the country's glorious heritage, and inculcate a sense of team spirit in them. In an education system where children are under pressure to perform and compete with one another, there is little time for anything else.

Such dance dramas and ballets provide not only a diversion but also help them hold on to the cultural roots, an ISKCON spokesperson said.
