Kozhikode: The Indian Council of Medical Research, under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, has identified Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) and Research Centre, Kochi, to establish a rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease registry in Wayanad district. The proposed project is the second phase of the Jai Vigyan Mission Mode Project of the Ministry for control of the two diseases. The project has been functioning over the past three years at the institute. A registry of patients with rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart diseases will be maintained. To determine the incidence of disease among schoolchildren, the project will conduct a survey in select schools. Other activities will include conducting awareness programmes and training classes throughout the district. Separate classes will be conducted for doctors, primary health staff, anganwadi workers, teachers and Kudumbasree volunteers. Poster exhibitions and documentary screening will be conducted for schoolchildren and others.
