HUBLI: South Western Railway (SWR) has registered an increase of 30.07 per cent in revenue from originating freight traffic till June 2006 compared to the revenue generated in the corresponding period of the previous year. Mr Trilok Nath Perti, General Manager, SWR said that it has lifted 10.61 million tonnes of freight till June 2006, while 9.26 million tonnes of freight was lifted in the corresponding period of the previous year, thus registering an increase of 14.6 per cent. While revenue earned this year till June is Rs. 581.69 crores, it was Rs. 447.21 crores in the previous year, he said. Similarly a growth of 23.49 per cent has been registered till June in the originating passenger segment and as a result there has been an increase by 14.15 per cent in the passenger earnings. And originating earnings have increased by 26.67 per cent, Mr Perti said. He also said that 1089 special trains were run and 954 extra coaches were attached. This year SWR would be introducing four new trains in two months, he added. Further Mr Perti said that an amount of Rs. 12 crores would be spent for passenger amenities this year while Rs. 8.16 crores was spent during 2005-06. SWR consequently got the transportation shield for three years in succession and the commercial shield for two years.
