MANILA: A significant increase of activity of Mt. Mayon in central Philippines has been reported over the past 24 hours, raising fear that it will have a major eruption in the coming weeks, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Sunday. Mt. Mayon, described as an almost perfect cone, has been spewing a lava flow of about 800 metres long. The institute's resident volcanologist said the increase in the lava's flow rate was a sign that a greater pressure inside the volcano had been at work at an increasing momentum, after a minor explosion took place on Saturday. He said there was a big possibility of raising the alert level to four, the second highest on a five-level alert scale. Xinhua
