76,000 farmers to benefit from waiver of crop loans

Certificates will be distributed to the ryots in a phased manner, says Minister

DINDIGUL : A total of 76,000 farmers would be benefited through waiver of crop loans in the district. The Reddiyarchatram Primary Agriculture Cooperative Bank alone had waived loans to the tune of Rs.7.49 crore borrowed by farmers from it, said the Minister for Law, I. Periasamy.

Distributing loan waiver certificates to beneficiaries at a function held at Reddiyarchatram here on Saturday, he said the Government had waived crop loans to the tune of Rs.200 crore in the district. A majority of farmers had obtained loans for purchase of tractors, cultivation of coffee, grape, lemon, setting up of poultry units and for irrigation. Waiver certificates would be distributed to farmers in a phased manner.

More concessions and facilities would be announced to the farmers in the forthcoming budget. The main objective of the Government was to wipe out all problems of farmers. Officials should extend full cooperation in implementing all welfare projects announced by the Government in time. Special efforts had been made for proper distribution of PDS goods, the Minister said.

In his special address, the Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, R. Karthikeyan, said the list of beneficiaries and details of the waived loan amount had been displayed in all PACBs and cooperative banks for the convenience of farmers.

Loans obtained by the farmers till March 31, 2006, had been waived by the Government.

"If farmers have any doubt or need any clarification, they can contact officials through telephone," he said.
