DPA councillors to get training on legislation

Special Correspondent

They should have a close rapport with residents in their wards, says Shanmugham

Pondicherry: President of the Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee P. Shanmugham has said that all the municipal councillors who were nominees of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (comprising Congress, DMK, PMK and CPI) in the recent civic polls here would undergo training to acquaint themselves with various aspects of the legislation governing municipal administration.

Speaking to newsmen here on Saturday, Mr. Shanmugham said that prophets of doom had prior to the civic polls said that the DPA would fare poorly. The performance of the DPA was so impressive that the parties constituting it had annexed a large number of wards in the municipal councils and commune Panchayats. This showed that the people had faith in the parties constituting the alliance. It was therefore the duty of the councillors to measure up to the expectations of the people. He said that they should prepare an agenda of action and schedule priorities to provide basic amenities in their respective wards. Drinking water supply, good roads, health programmes and streetlights and a few other amenities should be immediately taken care of by councillors.
