ERODE: The Superintendent of Police, Sonal V. Misra, has said that the crime rate in the district has come down due to intensified police vigil and night patrolling. Speaking to newspersons here on Sunday, she said that police have also been deployed in interior villages as a preventive measure. She said that a criminal involved in several theft cases has been arrested and jewellery, television and VCD players have been recovered from him. On interrogation he identified himself as Ismail from Tircuhi and was earlier detained under Goondas Act. He escaped from the police twice and was nabbed on Saturday. Ms. Misra appealed to the public to inform the police on movement of new faces if they felt suspicion through phone 0424 2250100. Their identity would be kept secret.
Fatal accidents
She also said that accidents have been increasing every day and in the last six months over 300 such cases have been reported from various parts of the district. This was due to violation of traffic rules and most of them took place during peak hours. The Superintendent of Police said that on behalf of the district police administration, traffic sensitisation programmes were conducted in every police sub-division. A programme was held recently at Sathyamangalam in which school and college students, teachers and lecturers, bus, car, auto, lorry drivers and general public attended it. She said every day in Erode over 50 vehicles are registered and put on road for use. Ms. Sonal Misra suggested that changes should be made in the signal system in places such as Paneerselvam Park and Government Headquarters Hospital Road junction. She said at Government Headquarters Hospital and bus stand "free left" systems has been introduced.
