Mukut Mithi to be sworn in on July 19

Pondicherry: The former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Mukut Mithi, who has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry, will be sworn in at a function in the Raj Nivas here at 3.50 p.m. on July 19.

Sources said here on Sunday that the present incumbent Lt. General (Retd.) M .M. Lakhera, who was appointed Mizoram Governor, would leave Pondicherry on the forenoon of July 19.

Mr. Mithi will be the 18th incumbent of the gubernatorial post here. — Special Correspondent

Left stir against price hike on Wednesday

CHENNAI: The CPI and the CPI (M) will jointly hold demonstrations in district headquarters and towns on Wednesday to protest against the Central Government's liberalisation policies which have led to a steep rise in the prices of essential commodities.

The demonstrations will also draw attention to the need to revamp the public distribution system and contain the rise in fuel prices, says a release here. — Special Correspondent

FBTR completes twenty years

CHENNAI: Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee will participate in a commemorative function to be held on Tuesday to mark two decades of successful operation of the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) commissioned by the Department of Atomic Energy at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam.

Prithviraj Chauhan, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office; Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission; and Georges Vendryes, honorary executive vice-president, French Atomic Energy Commission, will also be present, according to a release here. — Special Correspondent

TASMAC employees' plea for training

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu TASMAC Employees Association (AITUC) has appealed to the management to provide training to employees in identifying fake currency notes.

Due to lack of training the employees are mistakenly accepting such notes from customers and when deposited, the banks are rejecting such amount.

TASMAC outlets should be provided with fake currency detector machines, the association said in a release. — Special Correspondent

10 injured in beetle attack

KARUR: About 10 persons were injured when poisonous beetles attacked them while they were bathing at a bathing ghat on the South Bank Canal at Lalapet on Sunday.

Sources said the morning bathers who came under attack from the beetles fled the area. The insects then attacked those waiting at the

Lalapet bus stop near the level crossing. They all took shelter in nearby shops.

While one person was admitted to a private hospital, others were treated as outpatients. — Staff Reporter

Assaulted in prison

MADURAI: D. Dhanasekharan (34), a relative of All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP S. S. Chandran, was allegedly assaulted in Madurai Central Prison here on Sunday.

According to police sources, some prisoners convicted in a murder case attacked Mr. Dhanasekharan following a heated argument. He suffered injury in the eye and was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital here. The jail authorities preferred no complaint till late in the evening. Mr. Dhanasekharan was arrested and remanded in connection with an attempt to murder, cheating and dowry harassment case, the sources said. — Staff Reporter

Trampled to death

ERODE: A coolly worker was trampled to death by an elephant. According to police, he was identified as Lakshmana Chetti (55) of Kodipuram near Hassanure. Police said that the elephant chased him when he went to fetch wood. A case has been registered in this connection. The Sathyamangalam Government Hospital doctors conducted post-mortem. - Staff Reporter

Ration rice seized

ERODE: The Sathyamangalam police seized 100 bags of ration rice meant for Public Distribution System (PDS) on Saturday night. According to police, the seizure was made while conducting a vehicle check at Senbagapudur village. The van driver and cleaner escaped from the scene. A case has been registered against the van driver and owner of the vehicle. - Staff Reporter

Man commits suicide

Erode: A man killed his wife and later committed suicide. According to police, Nixon (32) of Vendipalayam was having frequent quarrel with his wife Sumathy. It was said that on Saturday he doused kerosene over Sumathy's body and set afire. She suffered serious burns and died on the way to hospital. Nixon committed suicide by jumping before a running train in Vendipalayam area. Modakurichi police are investigating. - Staff Reporter

ERODE: Handloom and Textiles Minister N.K.K.P. Raja on Sunday visited the Dheeran Chinnamalai Mani Mandapam constructed at Odanilai village. He said Dheeran Chinnamalai's anniversary would be observed on August 3 at the Mani Mandapam in which Union and State Ministers, MPs and MLAs would attend. - Staff Reporter

Krishnagiri: As many as 24 persons, including three women, who were involved in brewing arrack were arrested during raids conducted by the Krishnagiri police at Bynapalli near here on Sunday. According to sources, 100 litres of arrack and 2,000 litres of fermented wash were destroyed during the raids. The Krishnagiri police have registered a case.

College student missing

TIRUNELVELI : The police are on the lookout for a youth, who went missing recently. The police said R. Saravanan (26), a second-year M.Sc. student from Tamil Nadu Housing Board Colony near Maharaja Nagar, had been reportedly missing since July 11. Based on a complaint registered with the police on July 15, the police were searching for the youth.

Found dead

Tuticorin : Godwin (24), a private school teacher, was found dead under mysterious circumstances near the railway track here on Saturday. The body was found near a bridge situated adjacent to Milavittan railway station.

Appointed

MADURAI: The Government has appointed 119 Cluster Resource Centre (CRC) coordinators to provide training to teachers/students in elementary/high schools under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Madurai district and collect data of all schools in their clusters.

These selected coordinators were issued appointment orders recently.

According to SSA authorities, the CEC coordinators will handle three subjects — science, mathematics and English — and function from the cluster-level resource centres across the district. The district totally has 165 cluster centres of which 33 are situated in Corporation limits and the remaining in rural places. — Staff Reporter

Boy killed

KARUR: A 16-year-old boy M. Karthikeyan of Coimbatore drowned in the Cauvery River in Mayanur near here on Sunday.

Sources said he had come to Madukkarai Sellandiaman Temple for some ritual.

Efforts to save him became unsuccessful.

His body was fished out only later in the evening, and was sent to the Karur Government Hospital for post mortem.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 103.63 feet on Sunday.

The inflow was 14,586 cusecs and the outflow 18,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
