KOLKATA: For the second time in four days the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) exchanged fire in the Chapra Thana area of West Bengal's Nadia district early on Sunday. There have been at least 14 incidents of firing between the two forces across the South Bengal frontier since May, the last having occurred in the Gaighata area of the State's North 24 Parganas district on Thursday. Like the last occasion, Sunday's incident came in the wake of BSF jawans' firing at smugglers fleeing with cattle to Bangladesh. One person, stated to be an Indian, was killed in the firing after which the BDR fired nearly 60 rounds towards the Indian side, BSF's Deputy Inspector-General (Krishnagar), S. Ramaswamy, told The Hindu over phone. Thursday's firing incident had also claimed a victim.
Protest lodged
"The firing by the BDR was totally unprovoked and we have lodged our protest with the BDR authorities. A flag meeting has been sought at the commander level," Mr. Ramaswamy said. "This is the third time over the past two months such unprovoked firing from the other side occurred in this area alone", he added.
