Water release from KRS dam begins

MYSORE: The authorities at the Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir (KRS) on Sunday began releasing water from the dam consequent to an increase in the inflow.

The KRS water level was 124.25 ft as against the full reservoir level (FRL) of 124.80 ft and the inflow was 18,000 cusecs. The decision to release water through the crest gates was taken at a meeting held on Saturday, and flood warnings had been issued to the villagers in the downstream along the riverbed.

Executive Engineer Vijay Kumar and other senior officials offered prayers and observed a formal ritual before releasing water from five crest gates at 7.25 p.m. Officials expect the inflow to increase further in the next few days due to good rains in the catchment area of the Cauvery. — Special Correspondent

IAS officer transferred to State cadre

Bangalore: N. Manjunath Prasad, an IAS officer of the West Bengal cadre (1994 batch) has been transferred to the Karnataka cadre. An official press release said that the Union Government had transferred him to the State under the IAS Cadre Rules of 1954 following an order of the Supreme Court issued in February 2006. — Special Correspondent

Courses in Vedic Astrology

Bangalore: The Indian Council of Astrological Sciences will be conducting courses in Vedic Astrology leading to Jyothisha Praveena and Jyotish Visharad (higher) certificates at the MES Kishore Kendra in Malleswaram, Bangalore, from this month.

Chairman of the council (Chapter II), A. Narasimha Alse noted that the council founded by the renowned astrological scientist B.V. Raman in 1984 had 17 chapters, including one in New Delhi. The classes would be held on Sundays.

Protest demonstration against Mumbai blasts

MYSORE: The minority wing of the Mysore City and District Janata Dal (Secular) unit held a demonstration at the Gandhi Square in Mysore on Saturday to condemn the serial blasts in Mumbai recently. Party activists shouted slogans against terrorism in the country and urged the Government to bring the perpetrators to book. The protest demonstration was led by the president of Janata Dal (Secular) Mysore City and District unit Minority wing Azeezulla. - Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The Life Insurance Corporation of India has launched a new unit linked deferred Pension Plan-Market Plus. According to a release from LIC's Mysore Divisional Office, the policy holder can choose any of the four types of funds viz. Bond Fund, Secured Fund, Balanced Fund and Growth. "The Net Asset Value (NAV) will be commuted on a daily basis. The NAV under all funds will be Rs. 10 for one month from the date of launch."

Persons aged between 18 and 70 can avail themselves of this plan. Minimum premium payable for regular premium is Rs. 5,000 per annum and for a single premium it is Rs. 10,000, the release said.

Training for faculty

MYSORE: The Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore, will hold a three-day training programme on computer-aided engineering drawing from July 17 for the engineering faculty. According to a press statement, the objective of the training is to teach a new subject to the faculty of engineering colleges in the city. Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is also participating in the programme along with software engineers from Uni Graphics. The training will be held at the Seminar Hall in the Administrative Block of NIE. - Staff Correspondent

Swimming coaching

MYSORE: The Physical Education Department of University of Mysore will organise a swimming coaching camp at the University Swimming Pool in Saraswathipuram from July 26. Those aged above eight will be trained from Tuesdays to Fridays between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to a press statement.

Weekend camps will also be organised. Interested persons can contact the Physical Education Department of Mysore University for details, the press statement added.

Stolen phones

recovered

HUBLI: The Hubli Police have recovered stolen mobile phones worth Rs. 45,000 and arrested three persons in this connection. Parashuram Durgappa Devagiri, Maruti Durgappa Kallavaddar and Kiran Prakash Naidu of Hubli were arrested. The main accused Rakesh Ramappa Hirekerur is absconding police said. Power disruption

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging the underground power cable network, power supply in several areas of Hubli will be disrupted on Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The areas affected are Keshwapur Circle, Kusugal Road, SBI Zonal Office, Shaguna Apartment, Eureka Colony, Hemantnagar, KHB Colony, Desai Park, Old Badami Nagar, New Badami Nagar, Jakkali Plots, Avishkar Apartment, Madhura Estate and surrounding areas.

Bandh observed

Sirsi: Siddapur town observed bandh on Sunday in protest against the bomb blasts in Mumbai. A bandh was observed in Sirsi on Thursday. The bandh call was given by BJP and Hindu Jagaran Vedike units.
