KADAPA: A police constable was injured in stone-pelting by CPI(M) members who were staging a protest regarding ex-gratia for the family of a woman killed in a wall collapse near Kadapa old bus stand. Lakshmi Devi (23) of Mahabubnagar district was crushed to death and four others were injured when the compound wall of Royal Theatre collapsed near the bus stand on Sunday evening, according to the police. Her husband, Govind and other workers -- Venkatasubba Reddy, Lakshmi and Sridevi of Sunkesula in Kurnool district -- sustained injuries. The deceased and the injured persons were engaged in construction of Buggavanka flood protection wall when the dilapidated theatre wall collapsed, the police said. Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy, DSP M. Ramprasada Rao and staff inspected the spot. Policemen removed the rubble and rushed the injured persons to Kadapa Government Hospital. CPI(M) members staged demonstration at the scene of accident demanding that sub-contractor Ramana Reddy pay ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakhs to the family of the deceased. Police beat up Kulavivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham leader T. Sunil and CPI(M) activists retaliated by pelting stones. A.P. Forest Development Corporation Chairman Shaik Hussain, Kadapa Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy, CPI(M) district secretary B. Narayana, CITU leader Ravisankar Reddy, former municipal chairman S. Harindranath and TDP leader Nazeer Ahmed, visited the place and pacified the protesters. Executive Engineer of Irrigation Fazulillahi initiated discussions with the CPI(M) members on their demand for ex-gratia.
