`Flood relief funds diverted for road work in Belgaum'

Staff Correspondent

A fresh proposal has been made, seeking Rs. 70 crore for relocating villages

Villagers say
  • The fresh proposal is an attempt to embarrass Yediyurappa
  • Relocation of villages could have been done with the funds released for flood relief

Belgaum: The Flood-affected Villagers Welfare Association floated by those in Satti, Sankaretti, Saudi and Mangsuli, has alleged that the district administration is making a deliberate attempt to embarrass Revenue Minister and district in-charge Jagdish Shettar and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa by sending a fresh proposal seeking Rs. 70 crore for relocating villages.

In a memorandum submitted to Mr. Yediyurappa and Mr. Shettar here on Sunday, the association leaders accused the district administration of misappropriation and diversion of flood relief funds for road works in Belgaum city. The roads, which were repaired by spending crores of rupees just a few months ago, were now full of potholes, they said.

A fresh proposal had now been sent seeking Rs. 70 crore to relocate certain villages affected by floods.

It could have been done with the funds released by the Government. But the funds were diverted for other works, they alleged.

The association alleged that the proposal had been sent with the deliberate intention to embarrass Mr. Shettar and Mr. Yediyurappa as there were little chances of the Government providing such huge sums again.

Officials of the Revenue department had conducted an inquiry into irregularities in flood relief work and submitted the report. But the details have not been made public.
