Speaker's appeal to senior DU students

NEW DELHI: On the eve of the opening of the new session of Delhi University, State Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh on Sunday appealed to senior students of all varsity colleges to discourage ragging of newcomers.

"Freshers need an amicable and friendly atmosphere where they can start their studies in college with full enthusiasm and joy, while ragging causes tension and trauma in their minds," said an official release quoting Mr. Singh.

The Delhi Assembly Speaker has also advised senior students to welcome newcomers with flowers, by applying gulal on their forehead and hug them with a promise to help them at every step.

Lok Adalat organised

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) on Sunday organised Lok Adalats at Patiala House courts here to settle various kinds of disputes. The Lok Adalats were organised in association with the Delhi Commission for Women, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited and various banks. For the first time, criminal compoundable cases of pre-litigative stage were also taken up is association with the Delhi police. Delhi High Court Chief Justice Vijender Jain, who is also Patron-in-Chief and Executive Chairman of DLSA, was also present on the occasion along with several other dignitaries. Justice Jain also flagged off "3rd Mobile Legal Services Van" in association with Amity Law School.

Traders meet on VAT

NEW DELHI: Leaders of leading trade organisations from different States will attend a two-day national conference on foreign direct investment and value added tax in the Capital beginning July 20. The conference has been organised by the Confederation of All India Traders. "Apart from trade leaders, activists of several other organisations and groups opposing FDI in retail trade in this country have also been invited in an effort to form a joint common forum to launch a nationwide movement against FDI," said CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal in a statement on Sunday.

`ECG in women unreliable'

NEW DELHI: ECG in women may be totally unreliable even in the situation of acute chest pain, according to K.K. Aggarwal, president of the Heart Care Foundation of India. Speaking at a "Cardiology Update" organised here over the weekend, Dr. Aggarwal said in women not only ECG but exercise treadmill test is also unreliable. More sophisticated tests including stress 3D echocardiography should be done when in doubt.

Women may also suffer from angina with normal coronary artery where the chest pain is due to a disease in micro-circulation. Normally, women are immune from getting heart disease especially before menopause but in the current epidemic the numbers of women with heart blockages are increasing, he added.
