Nigam had sought permission to issue bonds to raise Rs. 200 crore

  • Revanna says permission would be obtained to raise Rs. 65 crore
  • The funds would be utilised to repair the canals
  • Adikebommanahalli Lift Irrigation Project almost ready

HASSAN: Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna said on Sunday that the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam had appealed to the Government to raise Rs. 200 crore in the form of bonds to take up development work in Cauvery basin and had been given permission to collect Rs. 135 crore.

Mr. Revanna was speaking to presspersons at Gorur, after performing "Ganga puja" and offering "Bagina" to the Hemavathy.

    More funds

The Minister said he was confident of getting permission to raise Rs. 65 crore more in the next few days. With the funds, the work on repairing the canals would be taken up to ensure that waters would reach the tail end farmers. He said it was the responsibility of the Deputy Commissioners of Hassan, Mandya and Tumkur districts to see that water reached farmers in the tail end.

"They can take the help of the police to avoid misuse of water," he added.

Mr. Revanna said work on Adikebommanahalli Lift Irrigation Project, which was taken up a few years ago at a cost of Rs. 22 crore, was nearing completion and the Chief Minister would inaugurate the project by August end.

The project would irrigate about 10,000 acres, he said.

    Special package

Under the special rehabilitation package, announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his recent visit to Vidarbha in Maharashtra for 31 districts of four States, where farmers had committed suicide unable to bear the burden of heavy debt, he said that work on constructing check dams would be constructed to harvest rain water and that would help farmers to greater extent, he added.

Mr. Revanna released waters to the Hemavathy Left Bank Canal on the occasion.
