Transmission line

HYDERABAD: R. V. Shahi, Secretary, Energy, Government of India, has said a mega 400 kv power transmission line is being laid connecting Gajuwaka near Visakhapatnam with Vadodara in Gujarat. This will facilitate transfer of power from surplus northern States to south.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday after a meeting of Southern Regional Electricity Board, he rated Andhra Pradesh as prominent among States in power sector. The APtransco had not only wiped out its losses but also started earning profits using reforms, he added. - Special Correspondent

APERC hearing today

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) will on Monday hear objections/suggestions on the proposed amendments to the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Vemagiri Power Generation Limited. The hearing will be from 11 a.m. at the court hall of APERC at Singareni Bhavan, Lakdikapul. - Staff Reporter

Plea to scrap GO

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Anganwadi Workers and Helpers' Association has represented to Women Development and Child Welfare Minister N. Rajyalakshmi to scrap G.O. 9 increasing the working hours of its members.

S. Vijayalakshmi, president, and A. Narayanamma, general secretary, said in statement that the Minister agreed to hold discussions with officials on July 28 and take a decision. - Special Correspondent

Irrigation SEs promoted

HYDERABAD: Twenty-one Superintending Engineers of the Irrigation Department have been promoted and given postings. The order comes in the wake of the full-scale implementation of `Jalayagnam'. The engineers have been shifted to projects where their services were needed. - Special Correspondent

Regularisation sought

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh State Contract Paramedical Association has asked the Government to regularise the services of 8,500 of its members and extend Pay Revision Commission scales to them.

The association, under leadership of R. Krishnaiah, requested Principal Secretary (Health) I. V. Subba Rao to regularise all eligible paramedical staff, on contract for the past five years. Association president N. Ashok sought filling of all vacant paramedical posts. - Special Correspondent

`Abducted' child freed

Kakinada: Deepak, 4, youngest son of a fancy shop owner, who was under captivity of alleged kidnappers since May 21, has at last been freed by the town police.

The alleged kidnappers -- V. Ravikumar, a cloth merchant residing in Kondaiahpalem area and Murali, his brother in-law, who demanded Rs.1 lakh as ransom -- were arrested at Bobbili on Saturday. Ravikumar, the main accused said he had lost heavily in business, which prompted him to commit the offence. - Correspondent

Group clash: six injured

ADILABAD: A clash between two groups of Congressmen from Sakrinai Tanda in Neredigonda mandal late on Saturday night left six persons injured.

They were admitted to Nirmal community hospital. According to information, the two groups wanted their respective candidates to be nominated for contesting for the sarpanch post of Rajura gram panchayat reserved for BC women in the mandal. -Staff Reporter

10 hurt in road accident

MAHABUBNAGAR: Ten persons were injured when the tractor in which they were travelling fell into a roadside ditch near Beechpalli on the NH-7 on Sunday afternoon.

The condition of four persons was serious. They were shifted to the Government Hospital, Kurnool.

According to information, Loka Reddy, former sarpanch of Thimmapur village along with his followers came in the tractor to Beechpalli temple for offering prayers. - Correspondent

Statue planned

TIRUPATI: Madabhushi Anantasayanam Institute of Public Affairs (MAIPA) will erect a life size statue of the former Speaker of Lok Sabha Madabhushi Anantasayanam Iyengar at a prime location in Tirupati. It has been resolved to develop Mr. Iyengar's ancestral property in Padmavathipuram into a committee hall. -Staff Reporter

Drivers take out rally

CHITTOOR: Drivers of autos, cabs, buses and lorry proprietors took out a rally here on Sunday with placards carrying slogans on traffic rules and with a request to the public to follow them in order to avoid accidents. The rally was organised by the Transport Department in connection with a weeklong celebration of `safety always for roads'. -Correspondent

Four injured in accident

KURNOOL: Four personssustained injuries when an APSRTC bus and an auto collided near AIR station on the outskirts of the city on Saturday. The injured were shifted to hospital. Two of them were in serious condition. -Staff Reporter

Student's achievement TIRUPATI: N. B. Harshavardhan Reddy, a B.A. first year student of Tirupati has secured a direct entry in U-18 category into the State-level open ranking tennis championships to be conducted at AM Jain College tennis courts, Meenambakkam in Chennai from Monday. -Staff Reporter

Rally on road safety

ANANTAPUR: The Transport and Police Departments conducted a two-wheeler rally here on Sunday to create road safety awareness among the public. KURNOOL: Astrologer Upadrasta Subramanyam was honoured at a function here on Sunday. The reception committee headed by Dr. Ramachandra Rao felicitated Mr. Subramanyam. Delivering a lecture on "Role of Astrology in Day-to-day life", Mr. Subramanyam underscored the need for developing astrology as an organised subject.

Sangaredy: Medak Superintendent of Police P.V. Sunil Kumar will answer questions from victims of land related crimes on Monday. The Dial your SP programme, which is being held on very Monday, has been dedicated for the real estate problems this week. People could call on 08455-276600 and register their complaints. According to a press release here on Sunday, the SP had already constituted a Task force for immediate response to such complaints. The SP informed that investigation on the complaints received so far had already begun. Nominations for sarpanch post

ADILABAD: As many as 247 nominations for sarpanch posts were received in Adilabad district on the second day of nominations on Sunday.

This takes the cumulative total of nominations for sarpanch posts to 347. Similarly, 530 nominations were received for wards of different panchayats, which takes the cumulative total of nominations to 658. In Adilabad division 46 nominations for sarpanch and 114 nominations for wards were received. -Staff Reporter

Spot admission

NALGONDA: The Government Degree College for Women, Ramgiri in Nalgonda is conducting spot admissions on July 18, according to a press release.

All those who have applied for admissions in various subjects of degree first year are advised to report at the college between 9.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on that day.

Workshop for bankers

KAKINADA : A one-day workshop for bankers on `strategies for effective customer service ` was held on Sunday under the aegis of the Indian Banks Association. Inaugurating the workshop, Deepali Panth Joshi, Banking Ombudsman, Hyderabad, highlighted the importance of customer service in banks and the role of an ombudsman in ensuring better service. Nominations filed

SRIKAKULAM : On the first day of filing of nominations for posts of village sarpanch and ward members, 225 persons filed nominations for the former and 540 for the latter. There are 1101 posts of sarpanch in the district, but elections would be held for 1093 posts . About 14.95 lakh voters would elect these sarpanches. According to sources, arrangements are in place for the conduct of elections. - Special Correspondent

Cyclist killed

KAKINADA : A cyclist, Nallam Satyanandam (55) was knocked down fatally while he was returning home in the Rajula Toorangi area by a speeding lorry near Andhra Polytechnic centre on the city's outskirts on Sunday noon. - Correspondent

Review meeting

JEYPORE: The review meeting of the NALCO peripheral development committee was held at Koraput recently. South Orissa (Berhampur) Revenue Division Commissioner (RDC) Parag Gupta and District Collector Subha Sharma were among those participated. The NALCO-Affected People Development Association submitted a memorandum to the RDC alleging that funds allotted for the development were not utilised properly.
