AN EYE FOR DETAIL: Kamili Nuey and Ping Liu of China getting training from G. Madhavi of Goutami Netralayam in Rajahmundry.
Rajahmundry: When a doctor in ophthalmology went to China in July last on an invitation by ORBIS International Flying Hospital to give her presentation on the latest medical developments and new techniques, two medical students showed keen interest in getting training in surgeries. The ORBIS readily agreed to sponsor their journey to India and asked the duo what made them to go to a small city like Rajahmundry where paediatric ophthalmologist G. Madhavi is having an eye hospital and tertiary eye care centre.
Keen on service
The two students -- Kamili Nuey of Xinjiang province and Ping Liu of Hunan of Changshi province -- said that they want to be a part of `barefoot doctors' of their country who reached out to rural population to provide health care during 1949. Ping Liu, along with Kamili Nuey, came to Rajahmundry 45 days ago. Ping Liu and Kamili opted ophthalmology as their specialisation after completing their degree in Hunan University Medical Hospital and Atush People's Hospital respectively. According to them there is no population-based survey about blindness in their country as it was under the Communist regime for centuries and after globalisation, the rate of blindness is about 1 per cent. "Earlier we thought of only earning. But now we want to reach out to rural masses and serve them," they say. They are all in praise for Dr. Madhavi and Madhu of the institute where they are undergoing training.
