MYSORE: Confusion surrounding the construction of Makkaji Chowk commercial complex in the city has been compounded by the recent revelation that the authorities are yet to release land for the project. Though the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) and the promoters of the project Maverick Holdings Ltd signed an MoU recently, the Managing Director of the company Uday Garudachar told The Hindu that the work can commence only if the land was released to them. Makkaji Chowk is adjacent the K.R.Circle and the Town Hall and is spread over nearly 2.5 acres. The MCC is trying to transfer the land to the project promoter to construct a multiplex and a shopping mall but the land is mired in legal dispute. One of the litigants, G.M. Netaji, said that he and several others had filed a case in the court which on June 12 directed that status quo be maintained until the issue was resolved. Mr. Netaji claimed that the original land acquisition notice was issued more than 30 years ago but as per the law, it has to be executed within five years or the notice will lapse. "Not only did the MCC collect tax from us till 1986 but also issued revised tax notice that amounts to according legal recognition to our claims of land ownership," he said. Citizens' groups in Mysore have launched a signature campaign against the project. The Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) said the campaign was to bring pressure on the Government to cancel the project. Public can send letters to Makkaji Chowka Protest Campaign, MGP, 6/1 Vivekananda Road, Yadavagiri, Mysore 570020. These will be forwarded to the Chief Minister.
