CHENNAI : In a major raid, the Chennai city police seized 7,000 pirated compact discs (CD), valued at Rs.4 lakh and arrested two persons in this connection on Sunday. A total of 23 CDs of Tamil movies including `Paarijatham', `Naalai' and `Thalaimagan,' among gadgets were seized. Acting on a tip off, Kothavalchavadi police Inspector Lakshmanan and team raided the premises of one Mohammed Ibrahim (46) in Thanga Salai Street, MKB Nagar, and confiscated the pirated CDs. Based on the confession of Ibrahim, the team also searched a house in Mullai Nagar, MKB Nagar and seized five CD writers and also arrested one Imran Khan, the associate of Ibrahim, police said. Inquiries revealed that the "original" CDs were procured from Pondicherry by the accused and after copying them , the pirated versions were circulated in Burma Bazaar. A case under the Video Piracy Act was registered against the two accused, , police added.
Coolie murdered
Pallikaranai police is investigating the suspected murder of a coolie identified as Anandan (36), a resident of Sankarapuram in Pallikaranai police station limits. The victim was reportedly murdered in the wee hours of Sunday. Police said, the victim's body had a few cut injuries in the neck. The motive behind the crime was unknown. A hunt is on to nab the accused.
Hit and run
Vijayakumar (42) of Ayanavaram was hit by an unidentified vehicle late last night near Nungambakkam High Road in Pondy Bazaar traffic police limits. Police said Vijayakumar, employed in a private textile shop as a tailor, was returning home when the accident took place. Further investigation is on.
Demonstration
Thirty-seven volunteers of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, who staged a demonstration in front of the Guindy Railway Station here on Sunday, were removed from the scene by police. Police said the agitators, led by Prabhakar, demanded arrest of the culprits behind the Mumbai serial blast and condemned the forces behind the dastardly act in which about 200 innocent lives were lost. The agitators, who were arrested, were let off in the evening, police added.
