A51 bus halt at Simpson sought Time and again it has been brought to the notice of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) officials the need for No. A51 buses (Tambaram East to High court) to halt on Mount Road at The Hindu office (next to Simpson's). This is a strategic point, with scores commuter alighting and boarding buses at this stop on their way to office and back. At present, the bus stops only at the LIC building bus stop; after LIC, the next and final stop is High Court. In spite of this stop being a mandatory stop, the bus crews do not stop the bus here, putting commuters to great distress. V. T. Ravi Velachery Nanganallur road in poor shape In Nanganallur, MGR Road is in very bad shape. The road has not been blacktopped for months together. Because of this, vehicles passing through raise huge amounts of dust, leaving houses in the area full of dust. Added to this, there are many potholes on the road, which poses a major hazard to two-wheeler riders. At night after 10 p.m. tipper lorries ply at high speed on the road, posing problems for other road users. Will Alandur municipality take immediate action to blacktop the road? R. Logamani Nanganallur Notify change in train timings Instead of issuing Railway Time Tables once every six months, I suggest the Railways consider issuing periodical amendments relating to changes in train timings, introduction of new trains, or their extension. This will save an unnecessary expenditure of Rs.50/- per annum for the travelling public. P.S. Vaidyanathan, West Mambalam No streetlights on Clinton Road The road connecting the Perambur Subway Bridge and Ayanavaram (Clinton Road) is completely dark after sundown. The road is one of the main roads connecting the Railway Hospital, Raghavendra Swamy Brindavanam temple, Integral Coach Factory and Kellys. In the absence of streetlights, accidents are quite frequent. We request authorities to install streetlights as early as possible. S. Sabarinath, Jawahar Nagar Traffic guide in English and Tamil A traffic guide in English and Tamil, indicating in detail the various traffic rules and regulations, traffic signs and signals and punishments for violators is a long-felt need of the road-users in the city. Such a publication will benefit drivers and others and will surely help avert road accidents in Chennai. The traffic wing of the police should publish such a guide early. P. V. Srinivasan, Sastri Nagar Install ticket vending machine There are many city/ suburban railway stations where ticket counters are located on one side of the station causing great inconvenience to commuters who come from the other side in the matter of purchasing journey tickets. Now that the automatic ticket vending machines have been installed in the Moore Market Complex and are fast becoming passenger-friendly, it is suggested that such machines may be installed at the platforms of all the railway stations where the ticket counters are located on one side. This will benefit passengers and do with long lines for buying tickets. This will also increase the revenue of Railways and minimise, if not curb altogether, ticketless travelling to a considerable extent. I appeal to the management of Southern Railways as well as the Banks sponsoring such machines, to act swiftly and install such machines for the benefit of passengers. M. Nagasubramanian, Hon, Secretary, Flat Owners Association, Ambattur Why this disparity? The recent freak accident in which a truck driver died when the truck came in contact with an overhead live wire, should be an eye opener for the TamilNadu Electricity Board (TNEB). Even after the installation of compact transformers at many places, the overhead wires (OH) are precariously hanging without being converted to underground (UG) cable system in the densely populated TNHB layout of TVS Colony. Our association represented this to the then SE, Annanagar a year back, who promised to replace all the OH wires to UG, in stages. But recently when the present SE was contacted, to our dismay, he replied that such conversions could be carried out only within city limits and not in municipal areas. However, when the requests of the residential colonies for underground cables are pending, the overhead lines have been hurriedly changed to underground cables in nearby areas where small industries are predominant. Will the TNEB officials care to explain why this is so? V. Rajagopal, President, Annanagar Western Extension Residents Welfare Association Subway needs lighting facility Consequent to the doubling of the broad gauge suburban lines, certain alterations were made to Duraisamy sub-way in T.Nagar, such as the elevation of pedestrian pathway under the bridge to about 4' height on both sides with supporting grilles for safety purposes. But the poor lighting facility on the subway causes much hardship to the motorists as well as the general public. In particular, elderly people and women find it very difficult to cross after sunset because of poor visibility. Moreover, due to the insufficient lighting, sometimes, senior citizens while climbing or descending the steps on either side of the pedestrian path, lose their balance and stumble or fall. Women are reluctant to cross this stretch because of the fear of anti-social elements. Hence, there is an urgent need to provide better lighting in the subway. S. Jayabalan, West Mambalam Gross parking violations on road I am a regular commuter along the 2.5 km stretch of road between Balaji Nagar and Gopalapuram via Avvai Shanmugham Salai. The entire stretch is choked with vehicles parked on both the sides. This restricts the flow of traffic, leading to congestions and accidents, especially during peak hours. To make matters worse, the pedestrian walkways are heaped with garbage, rubble and debris from construction sites. At some places they doubles up as an open lavatory. It is an ordeal to walk past this area, especially for school going children and senior citizens. Citizens can help the government serve them better by maintaining and utilising the facilities provided to them. Alternative parking space, effective garbage disposal can be easily and effectively provided. Elizabeth Jans, Gopalapuram Frequent power failures in Mylapore We, the residents of Nattu Muthu Kumarappa Street at Mylapore are facing frequent power cuts for the past 2 weeks, particularly from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. or so. When we complained to the electricity department, they said that a transformer was not functioning properly and that the staff was rectifying that. There is also a problem of low voltage on this street. If the authorities concerned look into this matter and solve it at the earliest, we will be very grateful. Sundar Mylapore Regulate share autorickshaws Share auto drivers conspire with each other to hoodwink the RTO inspectors and traffic police at major traffic intersections in the city. Though the fine for over-loading has been increased to Rs. 5,000 from Rs. 50, one finds share-auto drivers accommodating more than the permitted number in their vehicles. Will the authorities look into this? K. Pradeep, Mogappair A neglected street in Adambakkam Karuneegar street of Adambakkam is in a dilapidated condition for many years now. It is not known why Alandur Municipal council is giving a stepmotherly treatment to this road, whereas, the adjacent Ghen Maadam Street and St. Thomas Mount-Vanuvampet stretch road have been provided excellent maintenance. It is high time that the authorities take up the issue as a priority. M. Thiyagarajan, Senior Citizen Adambakkam CBSE text books not available CBSE has announced its new syllabus for class IX and X for this academic year and schools reopened on 5-6-06. But even after one month the text books for class IX and X are not available in the market and students and parents are running from pillar to post to get copies of textbooks or download text books from the net. Why is there such a lackadaisical attitude on the part of the NCERT and CBSE authorities? G. Abyvarghese, President, Senthil Nagar Youth & Resident's, Welfare Association (West), Kolathur Power cuts are a routine feature There is not a single day without power failures in Tapalpetty area especially KKR Town area. Though on either side of KKR Town there is no electricity failure, KKR Town, a purely residential area, is being given scant attention when it comes to rectification works. The telephone number 25376218 is never reachable. As a result consumers cannot even find out when the electricity will be restored. Will the authorities at the TNEB Sub Station, Madhavaram find a lasting solution to the problems? A. R. Dana Babu, Madhavaram Power cuts, voltage fluctuations The residents of Alwar Thiru Nagar falling under A.T.Nagar substation of TNEB are facing regular power cuts, invariably at night and constant low voltage causing great hardships to the students, infants, aged and sick. The electrical equipment and motors are often damaged due to the voltage fluctuations. Currently, the colony is linked to 4 different transformers, and there is no coherent approach to its problems. The TNEB is well aware of the plight of the residents and power cuts are restored only after 1 or 2 hours; no permanent solution seems to be forthcoming. Repeated representations to the TNEB, including SE/EEs (K.K.Nagar) and the grievance machinery, in the past 2 years have not yielded any response. The colony developed as early as 1972, and has about 300 households, but it has been totally neglected by the TNEB; a transformer to meet the load has not been set up till now. V.S. Venkataraman Secretary Alwar Thirunagar Annexe Residents Welfare Association CMWSSB reply The CMWSSB Public Relations Officer writes: V.R. Chandran, Vice President Exnora Innovator's Club, Ayanavaram requested piped water supply to the residents of parts of Ayanavaram area. These areas fall under Kilpauk water distribution zone. Improvement works for strengthening of water distribution system in Kilpauk zone will be taken up shortly. Work to lay a separate feeder main line along Konnur High Road is under consideration. On completion of the work, the water supply position will improve on Konnur High Road, Officer Colony, P.E. Koil Street and Tagore Nagar.
