Kolkata: Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee requested the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party not to "behave irresponsibly" in the aftermath of the Mumbai blasts. Any attempt "to try to take political mileage [out of the recent blasts] is unfortunate," he added. "I appeal to the BJP not to behave irresponsibly. Their leader L.K. Advani had said that there should be a collective effort by all political parties to face the aftermath of the blasts [with responsibility] but his party is not heeding it," Mr. Mukherjee regretted at a convention against terrorism organised by the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee here on Sunday. The aim of the terrorists is to create "sensation" and extraction of political mileage from such a situation should not be the policy of any political party, the Minister said. Mr. Mukherjee said that there was no reason to believe that communalism had been weeded out. Some forces were taking recourse to Islamic tenets to give an ideological face to terrorist activity but Islam deplored all terrorism, he added.
