ERODE: The Tamil Nadu Government has proposed the setting up of small ports at Rameswaram and Nagapattinam. State Highways and Ports Minister M.P. Saminathan on Sunday said the proposals had been sent to the Union Shipping Ministry. Once sanction was received, the State Government would start work.
Distributes spectacles
He was speaking after distributing spectacles to drivers at a programme conducted by Bhagawathy Welfare Trust, Erode, and Union Surface Transport and Shipping Ministry, at Kattupalayam. Mr. Saminathan said the government would construct embankment walls in Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and other coastal areas to protect people from tsunami-like disasters.
Violation of traffic rules
Pointing out that violation of traffic rules led to loss of several lives, he urged people to abide by road rules. His Ministry had submitted a proposal to conduct free eye check-up of drivers, especially those driving heavy vehicles, to the Chief Minister. Speedbreakers would be constructed in 2000 places in the State.
Educating drivers
Bhagawathy Welfare Trust president R. Saeenathan said vehicle drivers were being educated about traffic rules for several years now. Modakurichi MLA R.M. Palanisamy spoke.
