Kumbakonam: Thanjavur Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar has said that a memorial to the 94 children, who died in the Krishna School fire accident at Kumbakonam in July 2004, will be constructed. On the second anniversary of the accident, he paid homage to the victims by placing a wreath at the school. He also unveiled their photos. He said that the State Government allotted Rs 60 lakh for the memorial and it would be constructed on a 10,000 sq ft plot near Palakarai. The work will be completed in nine months time.
Music programme
Earlier, `Valarum Isai Kalaignargal" of Kumbakonam staged a music programme. Parents of the deceased children and students paid their homage by offering flower petals and lighting candles. The parents handed over the forms, expressing their wish to donate their eyes, to the doctors in Kumbakonam Government hospital. Devakumari, Joint director of Health, said that in Thanjavur district 62,727 persons had donated their eyes. People from all walks of life arrived to pay homage. G. Rangaswamy Moopanar, president of Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha, Lata Manoharan, Chairperson of Kumbakonam municipality and K. Anbazhagan, Chairman, Kumbakonam panchayat union, were among them.
