Approval granted for sports training centre at Mangala Stadium

MANGALORE: Sports Authority of India (SAI) has approved setting up of a sports training centre at Mangala Stadium here at an estimated cost of Rs. 5 crore.

M.P. Ganesh, executive director, SAI, has communicated the decision to the State Sports Authority.

Dr. Ganesh has directed the local authorities to hand over infrastructure at the stadium to SAI for early completion of the project. A press release from Manjunath Bhandary, president of Dakshina Kannada District Athletic Association, here said that a 400-m. athletic cinder track, multipurpose indoor stadium with wooden flooring, three tennis courts, one basketball and three volleyball courts would be handed over to SAI to enable it to start the project.

At its 48th finance committee meeting held in New Delhi, SAI approved setting up of a special area games (SAG) training centre in Shimoga. It directed Commissioner, Youth Services and Sports, to identify 24 acres of land in Shimoga and lease it out for 99 years to set up a full-fledged SAG scheme to train tribal children from Shimoga and adjoining districts.

Dr. Ganesh has directed the Commissioner to hand over to the authority the 400-m. cinder track, two volleyball courts, the basketball and handball courts and dormitory accommodation until the SAG centre is set up.

A delegation headed by Mr. Bhandary, who is also vice-president of Karnataka State Athletics Association, had sought nod for setting up of a training centre here, and a SAG centre at Shimoga.

A team from SAI has already toured Mangalore and Shimoga in this regard and held discussions with the local authorities.
