Welfare schemes being executed with vigour, says Vasan

KADAYANALLUR: Union Minister for Project Implementation and Statistics G.K. Vasan has assured the people of Tamil Nadu that the welfare programmes of the Union Government, as per the Common Minimum Programme, would be executed with full vigour in the state.

Addressing the Education Development Day celebrations held at Kadayanallur in Tirunelveli district on Sunday, organised by Congress MLA from Kadayanallur, S. Peter Alphonse, Mr. Vasan complained that the Indra Awas Yojana, designed to provide shelter for the poor, was not properly implemented in Tamil Nadu during the "previous regime", but it would be fully operational in the coming years.

Listing out the Centre's welfare programmes, "which is realising the dreams of K. Kamaraj," Mr. Vasan said a total of 35,306 primary schools had been established in the rural areas at a cost of Rs. 17,128 crore and 1,56,610 teachers appointed in these schools under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme.

Moreover, 1,41,886 additional classrooms had been created in schools. While 40,760 water tanks had been constructed in the schools, 65,771 toilets were built.

"Following in the footsteps of Kamaraj, the Centre has expanded the free noon meal scheme in schools across the country to benefit 12 crore children," Mr. Vasan pointed out.

Speaker R. Avudaiyappan said the literacy rate in Tamil Nadu had gone up only due to the tireless efforts of Kamaraj, who offered free noon meals, scholarships and free uniforms to students.

Rajya Sabha Member B.S. Gnanadesikan, lauded Kamaraj, who constructed dams and ensured hefty investments in the heavy, medium and small industries sectors, and said he was the only one in Tamil Nadu after Karikalan to construct dams.

Ministers T.P.M. Maideen Khan, Thangam Thennarasu, Poongothai Aladi Aruna, M. Appadurai MP, V. Karuppasamy Pandian and S. Peter Alphonse, both MLAs, and Collector, G. Prakash, spoke. S.M.A. Majid, who was Minister for Local Administration, in the ministry of K. Kamaraj, meritorious students and teachers were felicitated on the occasion.
