Power cuts are back again

Staff Reporter

Distribution companies resort to 300 MW of load-shedding

NEW DELHI: Several parts of the Capital faced unscheduled power cuts on Sunday after private power distribution companies resorted to around 300 MW of load-shedding. Despite being the weekend, demand for power rose to 3,300 MW due to the hot and humid weather, while the Delhi Transco Limited could arrange for only 3,000 MW.

The power supply to the city was affected after one unit of Badarpur thermal power station tripped, while some generating units of Nathpa Jhakri hydroelectricity plant in Himachal Pradesh were closed due to high silt levels, affecting supply to the Northern Grid.

This led to power shortage in the Capital.

Several areas of the Capital, particularly Uttam Nagar, Janakpuri, Karol Bagh, Najafgarh, Trilokpuri, Mayur Vihar-III, Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Jehangirpuri and many regularised colonies faced long hours of power cuts throughout the day.

"If the rains continue to stay away from the Capital, things might worsen in the coming days. High levels of humidity result in an increase in demand for power. Despite being a Sunday, when all offices and other institutions remain closed, the demand remained high. If generation fails to improve, tough days are ahead for Delhiites," said a senior power department official.
