CBI probe into power privatisation demanded

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over sorry state of power reforms in the city, a leading non-government organisation -- People's Action -- has written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation enquiry into the power privatisation deal in the Capital alleging massive bungling in the "sell off" of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board to private power distribution companies.

Based on the resolutions passed at the All-Delhi RWA Convention held last week, it was decided to approach Ms. Gandhi to find out the whole truth behind the deal, said the NGO head Sanjay Kaul in a press statement on Sunday.

"If the ruling Congress fails to take any action on the issue, we would have no option but to approach the President in the matter," he added.

"Every aspect of the deal is clouded in suspicion of abnormal favours to private parties. Every enquiry that has been conducted reveals that gross irregularities were committed in the planning and execution of this deal.

Three independent authorities have indicted this deal," said Mr. Kaul.

Alleging that the people of Delhi were being subjected to unprecedented harassment on fundamental issues of power and water, Mr. Kaul in his letter to Ms. Gandhi stated: "It cannot be that the facts of the case have escaped your attention. We indulge you yet again and seek that you give this issue the attention it deserves. We demand that you immediately order a Central Bureau of Investigation enquiry."
