DTC to run 94 U-specials

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf on Sunday announced that the Delhi Transport Corporation would provide 94 U-Special buses daily from the new academic session of Delhi University beginning from Monday.

He informed that U-Specials were not a revenue-earning proposition, but DTC with support from the State Government was providing the service in the broad interest of the students.

He said DTC introduced the service in 1960 to facilitate students to travel to the University from different parts of Capital.

Over the years, these buses have become very popular with the students, he added.

The Minister said instructions have been issued to the drivers and conductors to maintain punctuality so that students reach their colleges in time.

In order to assist the University authorities and to prevent harassment of new students and for dealing firmly with anti-social elements, the crew has been instructed to take the bus to the nearest police station in case any incident of eve-teasing takes place.

In addition, the Transport Minister said a number of checking and flying squads will be deputed, especially in the month of July, to randomly check the U-Specials to ensure that instructions relating to dealing with anti-social elements were being strictly followed.
