Special Correspondent

They are seeking regularisation of their services and equal wages for equal work

IN SUPPORT OF DEMANDS: Employees working in the midday meal scheme staging a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Gulbarga on Monday.

GULBARGA: Workers, mainly women, employed as cooks and assistants in the midday meal programme in schools, on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here demanding that their services be regularised. They also said that they should be paid equal wages for equal work.

The workers, who took out a procession under the banner of the Samata Sainik Dal, submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to the district authorities listing out their demands and seeking his intervention to end their woes.

The memorandum pointed out that they had been working as cooks and in other positions in the midday meal scheme for the past five years on a fixed salary without any basic pay or dearness allowance all these years. They demanded that the Government pass immediate orders to pay wages on the principles of equal pay for equal work.

The memorandum also wanted the Government to regularise the services of all workers under the scheme and extend all benefits enjoyed by government staff to these workers also. The memorandum also said the Government should ensure that there was no political interference in the appointment of workers under the scheme. Officials of the department concerned should conduct the process of recruitment, it said.

The memorandum demanded that the supervisors of workers involved in the scheme should be compulsorily women.
