ERODE: Tannery workers in Maravapalayam on Monday urged the Collector to shift all tanneries in their area as no work was given to local workers and the tanners were patronising workers from other areas. More than 10 small tanneries were located in Marvapalayam area with hundreds of people working in it. On Monday more than 70 tannery workers submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Collector, to District Revenue Officer V. Santha. It said they were working in the tanneries for many years as `unorganised sector workers'. Other than salary they were not given any benefits.
No job
Of late, as they started bringing workers from other areas, many of them remained unemployed. They also complained that groundwater level had also been affected because of the tanneries and demanded that the Collector shift the tanneries to Perundurai SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre. Monday being the `Grievances Day', many people submitted petitions to Santha and DRDA Project Officer R. Rajashree seeking old age pension, family cards, house site pattas, employment and bus facilities. Some physically challenged persons appealed to the Collector to sanction loans to them for running petty shops.
