Grand win Italy's 5-3 win on penalties to break the 1-1 deadlock against European dazzlers France provided a fitting finale to the World Cup football tournament. Earlier Germany had provided a pleasing spectacle against Portugal while taking the third place. The World Cup was a global football feast. When will India produce a team that can match the best in the world? R.R. Sami, Tiruvannamalai Master tactician Hats off to the dashing Italian football squad which gallantly lifted its fourth World Cup title in Berlin. Lot of credit must go to Macello Lippi, the team's super cool master tactician who transformed the team with his Midas touch. Ranji Philip Stephen, Kozhikode Awesome Agassi Nirmal Shekar's write up on Andre Agassi (The Hindu, July 2) was an impressive account of a player who bloomed late in his career. I have seen him tame players like Boris Becker and Pete Sampras. His fitness was always admirable as he stood up to the challenges of the Federers and Nadals. Aside from tennis, Agassi's selfless work for the orphaned children makes him one of the best-loved sports personalities. Dr. V. Gopalan, Chennai Fast work We had the rare opportunity this time of enjoying both the Wimbledon final and the World Cup final on the same day. Though the football event went on past 2 a.m., I was surprised to see the report of the event in The Hindu at 6.30 a.m.! Hearty congratulations for the commendable effort. Arcot Easwaran, Chennai Towering athlete The news of the death of J.B. Joseph made every sports lover sad. Joseph was a towering athlete. At the inauguration of the renovated Nehru stadium the former IOC member in India, Ashwini Kumar had specially enquired about two sportspersons from Chennai _ Francis, former Indian hockey goalkeeper and Joseph. Joseph was a gentleman to the core. Dr. K. Gandhiraj, Chennai Zidane's apology While it is unreasonable to expect our sports heroes to be saint-like at all times, there is no denying that with fame comes the additional responsibility of being role models. In this context, Zinedine Zidane has to be commended for apologising to young children for that moment of indiscretion in the final. Suresh Manoharan, Hyderabad
