Corrections and clarifications

* A reader says that the heading of the standalone photograph "Award for Minister" (July 17, 2006) was misleading. The picture showed Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss receiving an award on July 14. The heading should have been "Award for Ministry". The Ministry for Health and Family Welfare has bagged the Luther L. Terry Award of The American Cancer Society for International Tobacco Control for its steps and commitment to tobacco control. It is in the category for "Exemplary Leadership by a Government Ministry". "The Ministry has demonstrated its unrelenting stance on health promotion and tobacco control through its support of a comprehensive national tobacco control policy and an effective FCTC (Framework Convention on Tobacco Control)," the American Cancer Society has said in a statement.

* A reader says the sentence in "Talks with Pakistan postponed" (July 16, 2006, page 1) "He [Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran] made it clear that the Prime Minister would make a strong pitch against terrorism in St. Petersburg" was clumsy. It should have been "He [Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran] made it clear that the Prime Minister would make a strong pitch in St. Petersburg against terrorism."

* Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, and not April 14, 1819 as stated in "Heritage and Cosmos" (The Hindu-Magazine, July 16, 2006, page 7).

* In "Speaking of Science — On the autonomy of scholarly institutions" (Science & Technology", July 13, 2006), Dr. P. Venugopal has been incorrectly referred to as a cardiologist. He is a cardiothoracic surgeon.

* In "Karur caters to chain stores worldwide" (Tamil Nadu, July 17, 2006), a reader in the U.S. points out that some of the names of chain stores had been misspelt. "Kohns" should have been "Kohl's Corporation", a department store chain, and "Walmart" "Wal-Mart". Also, referring to "Harrods" as a chain store was incorrect. Harrods is an upmarket department store occupying a 4.5-acre site on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge, London. Harrods is also a group of companies.

* Absolutely wrong, say a number of readers. Absolute zero is minus 273.15

Celsius, and not minus 253.15Celsius as we had said in "Corrections and Clarifications" (July 15, 2006).

* In the UNI report "Sledging Lara is asking for trouble, says Hussain" ("Sport", July 15, 2006), former England captain Nasser Hussain had said that Brian Lara scored 275 in the Sydney Test against Australia. A reader has pointed out that the West Indian made 277 in that match in 1993. The error was corrected in the later editions.
