Neravy commune panchayat chairman elected

Special Correspondent

Pondicherry: B. Rathinavalli, a Puduchery Munnetra Congress (PMC) councillor of the four-member commune panchayat of Neravy in Karaikal, was elected chairman of the panchayat on Monday.

An official source in the commune panchayat told The Hindu that Fauuzia Begam (Independent) was elected the vice chairman.

The election was to have been held on July 14. But want of quorum both on July 14 and on July 15 necessitated the postponement of the election to Monday and the functionaries had since been elected.

PMC legislature party leader K. Lakshminarayanan and the party`s whip in the Assembly V .K. Ganapathy were among those present at the election.

The PMC had annexed the post of the chairman of the eleven-member commune panchayat in Ariyankuppam near here on July 14 when the party nominee Anandan emerged victorious. Mr. Anandan defeated his immediate Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) rival Vadivelu in the poll by a margin of one vote.
