COUNSELLING: Education Secretary B. V. Selvaraj at the first phase of CENTAC counselling for biology group students in Pondicherry on Monday.

PONDICHERRY : On the first day of counselling through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) on Monday, most seats in the general category in the medical and dental college were filled by evening.

Counselling is being conducted for five courses, including MBBS, BDS, B.Sc. MLT, B.Sc. Nursing and BPT.

With colleges conceding only 280 seats of a total of 850 seats for admission through CENTAC, many students wondered whether they would get a medical seat.Naveen Ambrose who got the 51st rank, but did not get the college of his choice, said since he had three days to pay the fees he had time to decide.

Another candidate, Sudarshan, said he was prepared to take up a seat in any of the medical colleges.

Counselling began in the morning with about 350 students.

Waiting to be called in, at the Pondicherry Engineering College campus, the students, and their parents watched the allocation of seats on close circuit television sets.

Despite five medical colleges yet to receive affiliation from the Pondicherry University, and one still to get the MCI affiliation, many students sounded very positive that the colleges would get the affiliations.

Two colleges have announced their fee structure — The Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (Rs. 1.75 lakh per year) and the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (Rs. 1.50 lakh per year).
