Plea to form panel for development of North Kerala

Chamber says Chief Minister has agreed to consider the demand

KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan is reported to have agreed to a suggestion of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) to set up a committee that would work for the comprehensive development of North Kerala.

The CCCI said on Monday that the Chief Minister had given an assurance to its delegation in this regard.

The Chief Minister is reported to have told the delegation of the CCCI, led by its president C.E. Chakunny, that the Government would consider its request to constitute a Malabar Development Committee for the development of North Kerala (erstwhile Malabar).

The Chamber had asked the Chief Minister to be the chairman of the proposed committee. It also requested the Chief Minister to provide the committee with the necessary funds.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the Chamber urged the Government to take necessary steps to complete the ongoing work at Calicut airport either by Onam or Kerala Day so as to enable foreign airlines to operate services from there.

The Chamber urged the Government to take steps to reopen the sick factories in Kozhikode.

In the memorandum, the CCCI complained that the increase in tax on marble, granite and tiles, treating them as luxury items, from 12.5 per cent to 20 per cent had precipitated a crisis in the business sector in North Kerala.

Medical university

The other demands included setting up of IT parks at Mavoor and Kinalur estate, steps to improve facilities at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital and district hospital and making Kozhikode city the head office of the proposed medical university.
