Assembly passes appropriation Bill

Bangalore: The Karnataka Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2006, authorising payment of Rs. 45,099 crores out of the Consolidated Fund for services during the financial year 2006-07, was approved by the Legislative Assembly amid a dharna by Congress and AIPJD members.

The Opposition members refused to heed Speaker Krishna's repeated requests to resume their seats and allow a discussion on the demands for grants of various departments. Mr. Krishna then asked Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who holds the Finance portfolio to move the Bill, which was passed.

The Speaker also announced that the Karnataka Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) (Second Amendment) Bill, 2005 had been laid on the table of the House. — Staff Reporter

House mourns former member

BANGALORE: The Legislative Assembly on Monday mourned the death of T.B. Balikai, a former member of the House. He died on Friday.

Speaker Krishna, who moved the obituary reference, said Mr. Balikai was a member of the Eighth Legislative Assembly, elected from Sirahatti constituency.

Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M.P. Prakash, the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Vatal Nagaraj (Kannada Chaluvali Paksha) recalled the contribution of the former MLA to the fields of politics, law and social welfare. — Special Correspondent

KPSC releases final selection list

Bangalore: The Karnataka Public Service Commission has said that with respect to recruitment to the posts of assistant/first division assistant for 2005, the final selection list along with category/reservation-wise cut-off marks with date of birth is available at the head office and also at the regional offices of the commission. Reservation in higher education sought

HASSAN: Praja Vimochana Chaluvali on Monday urged the Union Government to introduce reservation for the oppressed classes in institutions of higher and professional education. Addressing presspersons here, chaluvali's State unit president Patapat Nagaraj said it was regrettable that the oppressed classes had to fight for their fundamental rights even now. The upper classes, constituting about 15 per cent of the population, were exploiting illiteracy and the lack of organising capacity among lower classes, he added. Chaluvali's State unit secretary Narayana Das and members G. Hemanna and B.M. Raju were present. — Staff Correspondent

Rs. 28.59 crore to be spent under NREGS

Bidar: A sum of Rs. 28.59 crore will be spent in Bidar district under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Assurance Scheme (NREGS). Gram panchayats in the district have been allowed to take up works of up to Rs. 28.59 crore under the scheme, C.M. Udasi, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, has said in reply to a question in the Legislative Council by member Quazi Arshad Ali. As many as 1,48,336 persons have registered themselves for manual labour in the five taluks under the scheme. Of the sanctioned amount, Rs. 14 crore has been released to gram panchayats. They have spent Rs. 1.78 crore in three months. This is a demand-based scheme and grants will be released as and when the gram panchayats demand them. — Staff Correspondent

Girl drowns

DAVANGERE: A five-year-old girl was drowned in a tank in the Azad Nagar police station limits here on Monday. The police said Sabina was playing near the tank near her house when she slipped and fell into the tank. The police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Puja offered to Tunga

SHIMOGA: Women offered pujas to the Tunga at the Korpolaiah Chhatra here on Monday on the occasion of "Bhagirathi Habba" on Punya Parva of Dakshinayana to herald the arrival of fresh water of the season. Legend has it that it is on this day that fresh water emerges from the ground which is considered auspicious. Several women offered "bagina" to the Tunga, which has been steadily rising following copious rain in its catchment area. — Special Correspondent

Funds for rail project

BHADRAVATI: S. Bangarappa, Shimoga MP, on Saturday said that the Union Government would release Rs. 29 crore in three instalments for the gauge conversion of the Talaguppa railway line. Speaking at a function organised here by the Bhadravati City Municipal Council to felicitate him, he said the first instalment would be released next month. The Union Government had sanctioned funds for the construction of three overpasses in the city and the State had to contribute its share.

Constable ends life

Bidar: A police constable committed suicide in his quarters in Janawada in Bidar taluk on Monday. Venkataramana (27) had just completed his training and was serving his probation in the Janawada police station. He hailed from Kambalapalli in Kolar. He was not married. His colleagues found him vomiting furiously in front of his quarters in the morning. They admitted him to the government hospital where he died. He was so tired that he could not speak, his colleagues said later. Dejection in life had forced him to consume poison, the police suspected. MYSORE: A free cancer detection clinic will be conducted at Preethi Cancer Centre in Lakshmipuram here from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 20.

According to a press release from Preethi Centre for Oncology, those suffering from abnormal bleeding, swelling, lump or hardness in any part of the body, change of voice, difficulty in swallowing or sore throat have been advised to undergo check-up. Technology-enabled classroom

MYSORE: A technology-enabled virtual classroom was inaugurated at S B.R.R. Mahajana First Grade College in Mysore on Monday. According to a press release from principal K.V. Prabhakara, the classroom will bring live programmes for students from studios in Chennai. HIV positive network meet

HUBLI: Spurthi, Dharwad district HIV positive network, will organise a meeting of the people with HIV/AIDS on Wednesday at 10.30 a.m. at Lalge Building, near Ishwariya Vidyalaya, Unakal, Hubli. Digge Shivaji, District Social Welfare Officer, will speak about the facilities and assistance available to people living with HIV/AIDS from the department, according to a press release. — Staff Correspondent

Three arrested, cellphones recovered

HUBLI: The police have arrested three persons and recovered stolen cellphones valued at Rs. 45,000 from them. The names of the arrested have been given as Parashuram Devagiri, Maruti Kallavaddar and Kiran Naidu of Hubli. The police said the main accused, Rakesh Hirekerur, was absconding. A case has been registered.

Held on cheating charge

DHARWAD: The police have arrested a man who used to cheat unemployed youths promising them that he will help them to join the Army. The police gave the name of the arrested as Shivanand Dhoopdal, soldier, Madras Engineering Group, Bangalore. The police said Shivanand used to give fake appointment orders after receiving money from youths aspiring to get into the Army. Two cases had been registered at the Dharwad Suburban Police Station, the police added. — Staff Correspondent
