Custodial death of man: Sub-Inspector suspended

Kozhikode: Kannur Range Deputy Inspector-General of Police V. Shantaram on Monday placed under suspension Panniyankara Sub-Inspector M.D. Sunil in connection with the death of a person taken into custody.

Kozhikode City Police Commissioner H. Venkatesh said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Detachment) V. Chandran will inquire into the incident. Abdul Razak, 55, who was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly stealing a mobile phone, swooned at the Panniyankara Police Station during interrogation.

He was rushed to the Government General Hospital on Kozhikode beach.

Doctors said that Abdul Razak was brought to the hospital dead.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted at the Government Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday, Mr. Venkatesh said.

Kunnamangalam MLA U.C. Raman, who visited the hospital, has made a demand for a comprehensive inquiry into the custodial death.
